How Do You Ensure Safe Fault Isolation in a= 180MW Solar Plant with Multiple Incomers and Transformers

Here=E2=80=99s how we helped a = large solar project operating at 33=E2=80=AFkV build a fully coordinated re= lay protection scheme for transformers, incomers, couplers, and auxiliary l= oads=E2=80=94ensuring safe fault isolation and system stability.

As solar plants scale to hundreds o= f megawatts, protection systems become more critical. A missed trip or dela= yed clearing can cascade into equipment damage or generation loss. For this= project, with eleven 33=E2=80=AFkV feeders, multiple 100=E2=80=AFMVA trans= formers, and solar generation split across multiple incomers, relay coordin= ation wasn=E2=80=99t optional=E2=80=94it was mission-critical. 

Challenge=E2=80=99s they faced:

> Incoming feeders connected to dif= ferent solar blocks needed selectivity 
> Fault = levels were as high as 6.8=E2=80=AFkA at several 33=E2=80=AFkV buses <= b>
> Relays from different manufacturers (ABB REF615, ALSTOM P645) needed to op= erate in coordination 
> Back-to-back transformer tr= ips or busbar failures would lead to major plant disruption 
 

We carri= ed out a comprehensive relay coordination study using ETAP Star 20.5.0C:&nb= sp;

=E2=9C=94 All 33=E2=80=AFkV feeders were modeled u= nder phase and ground fault conditions
=E2=9C=94 Relay settings were designed based on IEC Norma= l Inverse curves with carefully selected pickup values and TMS
=E2=9C=94 TCC plots were generated to visually validate selectiv= ity between upstream and downstream breakers 
=E2=9C=94 Relay response was checked at 3x, 5x, and 8x fault current multiples to en= sure time grading
=E2=9C=94 All critical transformers and so= lar feeders were assigned discrimination margins between 0.3 to 0.5 seconds=  

 

As a Result
