How Do You Ensure Power System Stability in= a High Fault- Level Industrial Plant?

Here=E2=80=99s how we helped a major public-sector = refinery in North India maintain power system stability and equipment safet= y across its 6.6kV network. 

In hig= h short-circuit environments like refineries, protection failures or instab= ility during motor starting can lead to major operational disruptions. For = this project, with two incomers, multiple large motors, and transformer-fed= LV loads, robust electrical system planning was non-negotiable.

The client faced multip= le technical challenges:

Solution

We performed a multi-st= udy assessment using ETAP 22.5, including: 
=E2=9C= =94 Load Flow Analysis =E2=80=93 Verified voltage profile= and loading across all buses and equipment under multiple operating cases<= br>=E2=9C=94 Short Circuit Study =E2=80=93 Identified that MV= panel currents exceed safe limits and suggested upgrades or fault current = limiting
=E2=9C=94 Relay Coordination =E2=80=93 Defined optimal ID= MT settings for 6.6kV feeders with TCC curves ensuring equipment protection= and selectivity 
=E2=9C=94 Dynamic Motor Starting =E2=80=93 Verified that voltage dip during motor startup was limited to = 92.6%, well within the 80% permissible drop 
=E2=9C=94 = Harmonic Analysis =E2=80=93 Ensured THD levels at PCC were below IEE= E 519 thresholds; no mitigation required

 

As a Result

With this study, the re= finery achieved:
=E2=9C=94 Reliable voltage levels across = buses even during peak motor starting events.
=E2=9C=94 Va= lidated relay coordination and grading under worst-case faults.
=E2= =9C=94 Safe fault isolation without damage or nuisance tripping. =E2=9C=94 Confidence in harmonic performance=E2=80=94no fil= ter retrofits needed.
