Many assume a 50 Hz transfo= rmer can never be used in a 60 Hz system =E2=80=94 but that=E2=80=99s not e= ntirely true.

Let=E2=80=99s break it down.

 
 

Using a 50Hz Transformer at 60Hz:

=F0=9F=94= =85Yes, you can. The core will actually experience less magnetic flux becau= se the frequency is higher. That means there=E2=80=99s no risk of saturatio= n.
=F0=9F=94=85However, the reactance (X =3D 2=CF=80fL) Increases with f= requency, which increases the reactive power loss and Impedance by 20%.

Using a 60Hz Transformer at 50Hz:

=F0=9F=94=85This is where t= he problem begins.
=F0=9F=94=85At a lower frequency, for the same voltag= e, the magnetic flux in the core rises.
=F0=9F=94=85That pushes the tran= sformer toward core saturation, causing high magnetizing current, overheati= ng, and eventual insulation failure.

To operate a 60 Hz transforme= r on 50 Hz, you must reduce the voltage in the same ratio =E2=80=94 roughly= 5/6th of the rated voltage =E2=80=94 to maintain the same flux density. Ot= herwise, you risk burning the transformer under no-load conditions.

= So remember:
 =E2=80=A2 50 Hz =E2=86=92 60 Hz =3D Acceptable with = minor losses
 =E2=80=A2 60 Hz =E2=86=92 50 Hz =3D Unsafe unless vo= ltage is reduced
