Most engineers look at fault levels.

The truth is simple.
This one number can decide you= r breaker selection, your short-circuit calculations, and even your system = efficiency.

=E2=80=A2 The DC component during faults dies out quickly= .
 =E2=80=A2 Peak asymmetrical current remains lower.

This is where engineers get nervous =E2=80=94 and rightly so.
A high X/R ratio means:
 =E2=80=A2 High DC offset
 =E2=80=A2 Higher peak asymmetrical current
 =E2=80=A2 Higher making and breaking duty
 =E2=80=A2 Tougher demands on your breakers and protective device= s

This is why short-circuit standards (IEEE/IEC) adjust fault values base= d on X/R

 
 
 

3. But is a HighX/R a Problem?<= /b>

Not always.<= br> A higher X/R ratio also means:
 =E2=80=A2 Lower system resista= nce
 =E2=80=A2 Lower copper losses
 =E2=80=A2 Better effi= ciency during normal operation

So the problem isn=E2=80=99t the X/= R ratio itself.
The challenge is whether your breaker can handle the du= ty that comes with it.

And this is where most designs fail =E2=80= =94 not in calculation, but in selection.
