This is one topic where many engineers get = confused.

Shunt FACTS devices like SVC and STATCOM are widely used f= or voltage control.
But their effectiveness is not the same everywhere i= n the network. The key reason is system strength.

 
 

What do we mean by system strength?

- System strength is directly linke= d to short circuit current.
- Higher short circuit current means a stron= ger bus.
- Lower short circuit current means a weaker bus.

A strong bus has:

=E2=80=A2 Low Thevenin impedance
=E2=80=A2 High fault level<= br>=E2=80=A2 Small voltage deviation for load changes

=E2=80=A2 Low fault level
=E2=80=A2 Large voltage = deviation for the same disturbance

Why voltage varies more in weak s= ystems. Voltage change is proportional to reactive power change and system = impedance.

 
 
 

If the impeda= nce is high:

=E2=80=A2 E= ven a small reactive power injection or absorption causes a large voltage c= hange

 

If the impedance is low:

=E2=80=A2 The same reactive power change causes only a smal= l voltage change
That is basic power system behaviour.
